Kod Tangan Bahasa Malaysia or Manually Coded Malay (KTBM) was created by hearing educators and linguists in between 1980 and 1986 and remains the only sign language recognized by the Malaysian Ministry of Education.
These are some example of KTBM in variety of gesture in different of situations:
GREETING
Assalamualaikum
Right hand 'A' while the thumb applied to the right side of the forehead and then moved to the front.
Walaikumsalam
Right hand 'W' as applied to the index finger of the right side of the forehead and then moved to the front.
Hello
Right hand 'B', the end of the finger applied to the right side of the forehead and then moved to the front.
CALLING NAME
Awak(You)
Right hand 'A', with the thumb upright and point forward.
Dia (He/She/It)
Right hand 'D' and then is shown to the right side
Encik(Mr.)
Move the palm of the right hand 'E' to the next level of the shoulder and make small clockwise circles
Cik(Miss)
Right hand 'C' to front at shoulder and make small clockwise circles.
Kita(We)
Right hand 'K' the middle of finger is placed on the right shoulder, then moved the curve to the left shoulder.
Mereka(They)
Move the palm of the right hand 'M' inside, then moved forward into the front
FAMILY
Bapa(Father)
Open right hand and put your thumb on the middle of your forehead.
Emak(Mother)
Open right hand and put your thumb on the middle at the end of the chin.
Abang(older brother)
Create a signal "Men" and then open the palm of right hand facing down, then moved to the top.
Kakak(Older sister)
Create a signal "Women" and then open the palm of right hand facing down at the mouth, and then moved up
Adik lelaki(younger brother)
Create a signal "Men" and then open the palm of the right hand facing down at the top, then moved to the bottom.
Adik perempuan(younger sister)
Create a signal "Women" at the top and then open the palm of the right hand facing and moved to the bottom.
ASKING QUESTION
Apa(What)
Open the palm of the left hand, move the
right hand 'D' . At the end of the right hand of index finger, make a clockwise circle in front the left finger.
Bagaimana(How)
Open both sides of the hand, put the fingertips inside, put the back of the hand closely, then turn the hands forward while both hands facing upwards.
Berapa (How many/how much)
Make the right hand as shown in the picture, then open the hand palm.
Bila (When)
Left hand 'D' on the left of the index finger, use the index finger of the right hand and make as a clockwise circle in front of the index finger at the left hand.
Kenapa (Why)
Raise right hand 'A' and turn the hand palm to the left side, thumb facing to the face side, and shake slightly to the shoulder.
Mana (Where)
Raise the right hand 'D', and the index finger at the level of the shoulder, then shake to the right and left
Siapa (Who)
Raise the right hand 'D', and put the finger as clockwise around the lips.
